Jun 11, 2023The WD My Passport SSD is a compact and high-speed portable external USB NVMe solid-state drive. Measuring only 100.08mm x 55.12mm x 8.89mm and weighing just 45.7g, this palm-sized drive is incredibly small and lightweight.
While cloud-based storage options are becoming more popular, having a physical portable storage device can still be beneficial. Cloud solutions require an internet connection and can be expensive for large amounts of data. The WD My Passport SSDs have a capacity of up to 4TB, all in the same small form factor. They are available in colors such as blue, gold, red, and silver. The drive case has a metallic front and a plastic rear with a curved pattern across half of the drive. Notably, there is no activity light, only a USB Type-C socket.
The drive comes with a USB Type-C cable that includes a USB Type-A adapter for compatibility with older devices. Optimal performance is achieved when connected to a machine with a Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 socket. The box claims data transfer speeds of up to 1050 MB/s, and tests using CrystalDiskMark 8 showed speeds of 1021.19 MB/s read and 962.79 MB/s write.
When connected via the slower USB Type-A connection, speeds dropped to 461.25 MB/s read and 438.89 MB/s write. This is expected for older devices.
The drive includes WD Discovery software for easy file transfers to and from cloud services, as well as monitoring USB drive statuses. Western Digital also claims that the drive is shock, vibration, and drop resistant up to 1.98m.
